Life drawing is the most natural form of aesthetic illustration to me, pure and non-compromised. It also reflects the desire of instinctive sexuality and the rebellious, intuitive side of myself.

Evelyn Kourin @eva0_t.h.lam
Evelyn’s artistic inspiration stems from 19th-century art, with a particular fondness for the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. The profound emotions, narratives, and meticulous studies of nature found in these works serve as the guiding light for her studies. Driven by a deep love for vintage aesthetics, she strives to capture the essence of that era with her brush while blending it with her own imagination. Through this, she hopes to create a unique worldview that transports viewers into a mysterious and dreamlike realm. Evelyn’s works have been featured in various art exhibitions and commercial projects, showcasing the diversity and depth of her artistry.
In the past, life drawing was to me nothing more than a necessary practice to master human anatomy and form—an exercise that rarely extended beyond the technical. It wasn't until recently, when I read The Essence and the Nude, that something deeply resonated with me. The book mentions that in Western tradition, the naked human body is often viewed as the manifestation of truth, divinity, and human 'essence. This revelation compelled me to re-examine my own state of mind when facing a model: when I lift my brush, what exactly am I chasing? Is it a pure observation stripped of all distractions, or is it merely a reproduction of the established knowledge stored in my brain?

To me, life drawing is a dialogue with one's own perception. Moving fluidly among the model, the medium, and the self, I enter a state of deep focus and meditation between the moments of observing and putting pen to paper. It is within this space that I find my own rhythm and joy.

Jonathan Sze @jnls.lab
I began drawing Rodin's sculptures in the summer of 2023 to practice hand-eye coordination, and transitioned to drawing live models a year later. Now, I continue to explore various ways to document the body, practising how to decipher my own mental state at the exact moment of drawing. I also sketch buildings and objects, using the process to understand their fine details, and occasionally attempting to deconstruct and rebuild the subjects I draw.
To me, life drawing is using a pen to document the model's body as a response to their expression. In turn, the artwork automatically records my own mood and imagination at that very moment. The process itself carries a meditative, therapeutic effect—the whole experience feels quite Zen and meaningful. I often remind myself that I am not a camera meant to merely document the body; drawing with absolute precision doesn't necessarily reflect reality. The 'reality' in our minds is entirely subjective, constantly shaped by our environment and perception. Our tools and techniques are naturally limited—heck, I often turn up to drawing sessions having forgotten to bring a pen! Yet, limitation is vital to creation because the true value lies in how we choose to confront those limitations.

May Hung is an 18-year-old artist based in Hong Kong, captivated by the beauty of humanity and the subtle connections that bind people together. Her work centers on the human form, exploring its grace, diversity, and the stories that reside within each individual.
May Hung
For me, figure drawing is a profound means of exploration. Through the canvas, I seek to explore both my own body and the bodies of others, discovering the unique stories, emotions, and vulnerabilities they hold. It goes beyond mere anatomy; it is about capturing the raw essence of human existence. This practice allows me to appreciate diversity, break down societal inhibitions, and connect with humanity on a deeper, more intimate level. Ultimately, drawing the human form is a journey of self-discovery and a way to celebrate the pure beauty of our shared physical reality.

Mark Law was born in Hong Kong in 1979. He began studying drawing and painting in the 1990s and subsequently pursued a career in artistic creation, working primarily in drawing, oil painting, and sculpture. In 2019, he founded "Antenna Art Studio" in Hong Kong. While Law's early work focused on social issues, his later creations evolved through sketching and live observation, capturing inner darkness to present the universal human spirit through figurative and realistic forms. Since 2010, Law has dedicated himself to the development of painting as an art form, navigating the space between realism and figurative art. His works have been exhibited in Australia, Japan, China, and Hong Kong.

Life drawing is my laboratory of observation and expression. Each model offers a unique encounter, inviting me to explore how line, shape, value, colour, and design can translate a fleeting visual experience into a personal artistic response. The immediacy of the live session demands complete attention, fostering a heightened state of concentration where intuition and observation become one. Beyond the act of drawing itself, I treasure the shared experience of working alongside other artists, united by the timeless pursuit of understanding the human figure through art.

I have continually done life drawing since age 10, for me life drawing is a way to practice seeing. i want to see the world and it can take practice to do that. how a simple line is drawn can tell a story of how you see and what you see and how you feel about it. some people go to a gym to work out their body, i go to life drawing to work out my eye, brain and hand.

Raised in Macau, they majored in English Literature during their university years. Her work frequently connects individual intimacy through imagery, employing a stream-of-consciousness, poetic style to explore the understanding of life and death. Believing that images can encompass all that is seen and unseen, and deeply convinced that everything possesses its own language, they attempt to open up possibilities for dialogue between objects within her work.
My acquaintance with Jing began in a life drawing class. Inside the studio, I held the pencil while she stood still. To me, that was not merely the nakedness of the physical form, but a confrontation with the depth to which two bodies can connect. I sketched her state at that moment onto paper with graphite. Later, I photographed her. Even though the media differed, each of us navigates the world with numerous projections. You can view the physical body simply as a body, or merely as a play of shadows and lines—using your chosen medium to carry what you perceive.
The body does not lie, but the mind does. The process of life drawing opens an internal pathway: facing another person who also possesses but a single physical form, how honest can we truly be with ourselves?

Kin is an interior designer who studied drawing, watercolor, and Western art theory at the Sun Moon Art Studio during his youth. In his spare time, he creates comics and watercolor paintings. He loves capturing the dynamic movements of people in everyday life and always enjoys traveling with his paintbrushes in hand.
I have loved drawing people ever since I was a child. Whether it's a portrait, body shape, movement, or even the outfit and accessories—as long as it's related to people, I love to sketch it down. Life drawing is the absolute best way to practice depicting the human body. Any gender, body shape, or pose carries its own inherent beauty. Even the model's emotions at that very moment and the definition of their muscles hold a story. Whether it is a quick few-minute pose or a long multi-hour session, as long as I draw it with absolute honesty, the story of that moment splits into two keepsakes: one preserved on the drawing paper, and the other tucked away in my memory.

Life drawing is a relaxing and meditative experience for me. There are no two human bodies are the same, and even with the same model, each new pose can reveal wonderful new details. I enjoy the simple act of observing, drinking in all details, before choosing which ones to commit to paper. It is a silent dialogue with the model, a subtle attempt to guess their intention with each pose and trying to reflect that in a simple medium. Each drawing is a snapshot of a respectful yet intimate conversation.

Born in Portuguese Macau in 1977, they were admitted to the Sculpture Department of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in China in 1996, and obtained their Master’s degree there in 2003. They have been engaged in art education and sculpture creation for many years.
To me, life drawing is a form of expression that uses drawing tools to engage with the immediate environment in the purest and most focused state of mind. While the subjects of life drawing are vast and varied, looking back at my years of sculpture training, what was always most highly esteemed in the curriculum was the precise capture of the human body's structural contours, volumetric curves, skin tone shifts, and the psychological state of the subject. I am privileged to collaborate with Miss Pang this time. Through her subtle and nuanced control over her own physical form, I have been able to reconnect with the profound sensations I experienced when I first began creating figurative art.

I used to see drawing as a solo act, but life drawing sessions have transformed it into a social one. Without these gatherings, I never would have encountered such a diverse community of artists, each bringing a their own unique vision. In the studio, every gaze is fixed on capturing the fleeting essence of a pose. Yet, while the artist is the one observing, the resulting work allows the world to observe them; ultimately, the nude model may not be the most vulnerable individual in the room.

I believe that life drawing is a process of documenting the aesthetics of the human form. What is recorded is not merely superficial traits like posture, structure, or facial features, but also the interactions with the model during the creative process and the resulting sensations—a resonance of souls. Documenting this process captures the very essence of art: expressing human connection through imagery, and serving as a channel to study and search for humanity.

We inhabit our bodies from the very beginning, yet they remain strangely taboo. Outside intimacy, we rarely have the chance to truly observe them. To me, every body is sacred—worthy of admiration in all its forms, shapes, and curves. Life figure drawing gives me the opportunity to study human forms.

Charlotte @moving_drawing & @bodydrawing
Charlotte Lui (Lui Cheuk-Nok) is a Hong Kong-based painter who graduated from the Academy of Visual Arts at Hong Kong Baptist University in 2019, majoring in painting and printmaking. In 2021, she founded "Moving Drawing," a project dedicated to capturing the people and everyday stories of Hong Kong's streets through art. Wandering through the city’s bustling main streets and quiet alleys to sketch, she often carries a palm-sized sketchbook to draw freely, using simple lines to etch vivid snapshots of reality—depicting the hustle of city dwellers, the weariness of office workers, and the leisure of the elderly. Her message to everyone is to cherish each day as "today is the best day" and to live life to the fullest. Through her work, she documents the changing face of the city, allowing people to carry the memory of Hong Kong’s daily moments wherever they go.
Before I started 'Moving Drawing,' life drawing served as an excellent practice that allowed me to become deeply familiar with human movement. Every model has been my teacher, making it much more natural and effortless for me to sketch portraits on the city streets today.

To me, life drawing is a conversation rooted entirely in the present moment. It is about capturing the curves, light, and shadows as they intertwine within a limited frame of time, revealing the inherent life and beauty of the form."

[CRYSTALLISED SELF]
A Decade of Life Modeling: An Exhibition about Life Drawing
Looking back at ten years of life modeling, the body remains frozen in time. Within the safe confines of the studio, we explore the dynamic between the observer and the observed, the artist and the subject. These moments of stillness require immense strength and patience. This exhibition serves as a reflection for both painters and models, featuring works by 40 artists, to be showcased this June at FURNACE.

Curator
Pang Jing | Performance Artist | Life Model | Red Witch
Born and raised in Hong Kong, Pang Jing obtained her Bachelor’s degree from the Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University in 2014, and her Master of Fine Arts from The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2022. She has been a life model since 2016. Trained in painting from a young age, she uses Performance Art as a bridge between people—exploring body memory and perception, relationships and connections, the unknown and risk, and the land and its flora—to reveal the deep self and contemplate the unspeakable.
Driven by curiosity to become a life model, this profession has led her to diverse places and introduced her to various artistic communities. Through countless life stories, she has discovered the profound connection between the body, creativity, and humanity. Inwardly, in a state of absolute stillness, her senses are heightened, feeling the flow and rhythm of Qi. Outwardly, she has experienced firsthand society's perceptions and judgments of the naked body, slowly learning how to navigate curiosity, scepticism, and deep inquiry.

Bye!
